Trip Overview

The Shekhawati region is often called the “Open-Air Art Gallery of Rajasthan.” On this comprehensive day trip, you will visit two of its most famous gems: Nawalgarh and Mandawa. Unlike a standard city tour, this is a journey into an artistic past where wealthy merchants competed to build the grandest, most colorful mansions (Havelis). You will see walls adorned with frescoes depicting everything from Lord Krishna to Queen Victoria and the first steam trains. To ensure you understand the history and meaning behind these complex paintings, this tour includes an expert English-Speaking Local Guide who will walk with you through the heritage lanes and unlock the stories of the past.

Trip Highlights

What makes this day trip unforgettable.

  • Double the Heritage: Visit Nawalgarh (The Golden City of Shekhawati) and Mandawa (The Art Gallery) in one single trip.

Timeline & Itinerary

08:00 AM: The Morning Drive

our private chauffeur arrives at your hotel in Jaipur. We head north on the smooth NH-52. Watch the landscape transform from the rocky Aravalli hills to the semi-arid plains of the Shekhawati region. We can stop for a hot cup of tea at a highway midway.

11:00 AM: Nawalgarh: The Golden City

We arrive at our first stop, Nawalgarh. Meet your Local Guide here. We head straight to the Poddar Haveli Museum. It is one of the few Havelis that has been restored to its original glory. The paintings here are vibrant and cover every inch of the walls. Your guide will explain the lifestyle of the Marwari merchants who built these palaces.

01:00 PM: Authentic Lunch

After soaking in the art of Nawalgarh, we drive 30 minutes to Mandawa. We stop for a relaxed lunch at a Heritage Hotel or a clean local restaurant. Enjoy authentic Ker Sangri (a desert berry curry) and hot Bajra Rotis. (Lunch is Direct Payment).

02:30 PM: Mandawa: The Art Gallery

Post-lunch, we explore the streets of Mandawa. Unlike Nawalgarh, Mandawa feels more rustic and ancient. We visit the Goenka Double Haveli and Murmuria Haveli. Spot the quirky paintings—like a man listening to a gramophone or the Wright Brothers’ plane—that show the influence of modern technology on 19th-century artists.

04:30 PM: The Village Walk

Before leaving, take a short walk through the Main Bazaar of Mandawa. It is a great place to pick up wooden handicrafts or colorful tie-dye fabrics. The pace of life here is slow and charming.

05:00 PM: The Return Journey

With a camera full of photos and a heart full of memories, we begin the drive back to Jaipur. Relax in the back seat, review your pictures, or take a nap as your driver navigates the highway safely.

08:00 PM: Doorstep Drop-off

We arrive back in Jaipur. We drop you right at your hotel doorstep or the airport, marking the end of a wonderful day trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this tour and the Mandawa Tour?

The "Mandawa Tour" focuses only on one town. This "Shekhawati Tour" covers two towns (Nawalgarh & Mandawa), giving you a wider variety of art and architecture. Nawalgarh has better-preserved museums, while Mandawa has a more rustic, open-air vibe.

Can we buy paintings there?

Yes, local artists sell miniature paintings on old paper and silk. Your guide can take you to trusted workshops if you are interested.

Are there restrooms available?

Yes, we stop at clean highway midways for restrooms. In the towns, the heritage hotels and museums have clean facilities.

Is it too much driving for one day?

It is a full day (approx. 6 hours total driving), but the roads are good. We break the journey with stops for tea and lunch, so it is quite manageable.

Is the guide necessary?

Yes, absolutely. Without a guide, the paintings just look like pretty pictures. The guide explains why they are there, the stories from mythology, and the history of the merchant families.

Can we customize the towns?

Yes. If you have a specific interest in another town like Fatehpur or Dundlod, we can adjust the itinerary. However, Nawalgarh and Mandawa offer the best experience for a day trip.
