Total Trip Duration

6 – 7 Hours (Evening Village Experience: 3:30 PM to 10:30 PM)

Trip Overview

If Sam Sand Dunes is the “Party Capital” of the desert, Khuri is its meditation center. Located inside the Desert National Park, Khuri is a living, breathing village of straw-roofed mud huts (Dhanis) and wandering peacocks.

On this tour, you turn your back on the loud DJs and jeep traffic. You travel to a place where the dunes are pristine, untouched by tire tracks. Here, the “Cultural Program” isn’t a staged show for thousands; it feels like a private performance by the village elders under the open sky. You ride camels that aren’t rushed, watch a sunset that isn’t blocked by selfie sticks, and eat a dinner that tastes like home. This is the Authentic Rajasthan.

Trip Highlights

What makes this day trip unforgettable.

  • The Untouched Dunes: Khuri’s dunes are higher and cleaner than Sam. There are no permanent camps on the dunes themselves, just endless ripples of sand.

  • Village Architecture: Walk through the village to see traditional Mud Huts decorated with Mandana art (white chalk paintings). It’s a photographer’s delight.

  • Peaceful Camel Safari: Enjoy a slow, rhythmic ride into the sunset without dodging jeeps or hawkers. It is just you and the horizon.

  • Acoustic Folk Music: The evening entertainment here is raw and real—Kalbeliya dancers and Manganiyar singers performing with simple instruments like the Kamaicha and Dholak.

  • Organic Dinner: Savor a meal that often includes Bajra Ki Roti (Millet bread) and fresh Ker Sangri (desert beans), cooked with love.

Timeline & Itinerary

03:30 PM: The Village Drive

Your private chauffeur collects you in Jaisalmer. We drive southwest. The road to Khuri is quieter. You see more wildlife here—foxes, deer, and eagles.

04:30 PM: Arrival in Khuri

We reach the village.

  • The Vibe: It smells of wet earth and woodsmoke. Goats bleat in the distance. You are welcomed at a local resort or homestay with a cool drink.

05:00 PM: The Silent Safari

We head to the dunes.

  • The Ride: Mount your camel. The trek is peaceful. The camel creates its own path through the scrub.

  • The Sunset: We find a high ridge. Sit down. There is no noise here. As the sun sinks, the sand turns a deep, burnt orange. You can hear the wind whistling through the bushes.

07:00 PM: The Bonfire & Beats

We return to the resort/camp.

  • The Culture: The fire is lit. The women of the tribe, dressed in black swirling skirts, begin to dance. It starts slow and builds to a hypnotic pace. It feels intimate, not commercial.

08:30 PM: Village Feast

Dinner is served. It is a buffet, but the flavors are rustic. Try the Gatte Ki Sabzi and Garlic Chutney.

09:30 PM: The Return Journey

We drive back to the city under a canopy of stars.

10:30 PM: Doorstep Drop-off

We drop you back at your hotel in Jaisalmer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Jeep Safari in Khuri?

Rarely. Most operators in Khuri avoid Jeeps to protect the peaceful environment and the dunes. If you desperately want Dune Bashing, Sam is the better choice.

Is it safe?

Yes. The villagers are incredibly hospitable. It is a very safe and family-friendly environment.

Can we see the Great Indian Bustard?

Khuri is on the edge of the Desert National Park, the last home of this critically endangered bird. While sightings are rare and require luck, your chances are higher here than anywhere else.

Can we sleep in a mud hut?

Yes! If you wish to upgrade this to an overnight stay, we can book you a traditional mud cottage (jhumpa) instead of a Swiss Tent. It stays cool in summer and warm in winter naturally.

Is the road to Khuri good?

Yes, it is a paved single-lane road. It is narrower than the Sam road but has much less traffic.

Are there toilets at the dunes?

No. Toilets are available at the Resort/Camp where we have dinner, but not out on the open sand dunes.
