Trip Overview
Jawai Bandh is an anomaly in the wild world. In Africa or Ranthambore, animals are hidden behind fences, separated from humans. In Jawai, they are roommates. Here, the Leopards sleep on the temple steps and the Rabari Shepherds walk their goats past the leopard’s den without fear.
On this tour, you will leave the Blue City and drive south into the Godwar region. The landscape shifts from flat desert to dramatic, volcanic granite hills. The highlight is the Private Jeep Safari—a vertical adventure where modified 4x4s climb steep rock faces to find the “Ghost of the Hills.” It is raw, dusty, and incredibly real.
Trip Highlights
What makes this day trip unforgettable.
✅ Guaranteed Thrill: Jawai has the highest density of leopards in a non-protected area. The open rocks mean you don’t just see a tail in the bush; you see the whole cat in its glory.
✅ The Vertical Safari: Experience the adrenaline of a jeep climbing a 60-degree rock face. It feels more like rock climbing than driving!
✅ The Red Turbans: Capture the iconic image of a white-clad Rabari herdsman with his blazing red turban, standing calmly next to a leopard habitat.
✅ Jawai Dam: Visit the largest dam in Western Rajasthan. The blue water against the grey hills is a stunning contrast.
✅ Crocodile Point: Spot massive Mugger Crocodiles basking on the islands of the dam.
Timeline & Itinerary
11:00 AM: The Transition
Your private chauffeur collects you in Jodhpur. We leave the fortress city behind and hit the NH-62. The drive is a shedding of the urban skin. Watch the landscape change: the arid scrublands of Marwar slowly give way to the strange, alien-looking granite formations of Jawai. These rocks are a billion years old—older than the Himalayas.
02:00 PM: The Leopard’s Lunch (And Yours)
We arrive at a lodge in Bera/Jawai (like Jawai Castle or Varawal). The air here is different—still and heavy with heat. You enjoy a freshly prepared Rajasthani lunch. The locals will tell you stories of the leopard who visited the village temple last night. It sets the mood.
03:30 PM: The Vertical Climb
The Chase Begins. You abandon the luxury car for a rugged, open-top 4×4 Gypsy. The driver shifts gears. The jeep leaves the road and faces a smooth wall of granite. You grip the roll bar. The engine roars, and suddenly, you are climbing the rock face at a tilt that defies gravity. You reach the top of the kopje (rocky hill). The wind hits your face.
04:30 PM: The Ghost in the Granite
The engine cuts. Silence. The tracker points to a cave mouth 50 meters away. At first, you see nothing but grey stone. Then, a spot moves. A rosette pattern merges into a shape. The Leopard. He isn’t hiding. He is sitting on his throne of rock, watching the village below. He yawns, unbothered by your presence. There is no cage, no fence—just you and the apex predator sharing the same rock.
05:30 PM: The Shepherd’s Path
We drive down to the flatlands. We pass a Rabari shepherd herding his goats home. He walks right past the hill where the leopard is sitting. He doesn’t run. The leopard doesn’t attack. You witness the “Jawai Miracle”—a spiritual truce between man and beast that science cannot explain.
06:15 PM: Sunset at the Dam
We end the safari at the water’s edge of the Jawai Dam. The water turns liquid gold. Flamingos take flight. A crocodile slides silently into the deep. You sip your tea, watching the day end in one of the most ancient landscapes on earth.
06:45 PM: The Return Journey
We switch back to the car. The drive back to Jodhpur is a time to process the adrenaline.
09:45 PM: Doorstep Drop-off
We drop you back at your hotel in Jodhpur, safe and sound.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why go from Jodhpur instead of Udaipur?
It works both ways! Jawai is almost equidistant from both cities (approx 3 hours). If you are in Jodhpur and have a free day, this is the best wildlife option nearby.
Can we see the Ranakpur Temple on the way?
Yes. Ranakpur is a slight detour (adds 1 hour drive + 1 hour viewing time). We can do Jodhpur -> Ranakpur (Temple) -> Jawai (Safari) -> Jodhpur. This makes it a 12-hour day trip.
What lens should I bring?
A 200mm to 400mm lens is ideal. The leopards are often sitting on rocks some distance away, though sometimes they come surprisingly close to the jeep.
Is it safe?
Yes. The leopards of Jawai are unique. They are well-fed on wild boars and stray dogs and do not see humans as prey. There has been no conflict with tourists in decades.
Morning or Evening Safari?
Evening is better for a day trip from Jodhpur. To do a morning safari, you would need to leave Jodhpur at 3:30 AM! The evening slot allows a relaxed 11:00 AM start.
Are there toilets during the safari?
No. The safari is in the wild rocks. You must use the restroom at the resort/hotel where we stop for lunch before the safari begins.
