Trip Overview

In Udaipur, the Maharana is not the King; he is the Prime Minister. The real King is Eklingji (Lord Shiva). On this tour, you first drive north to the ancient temple complex of Eklingji (built in 734 AD). It is a spiritual fortress with 108 temples enclosed by high walls. The atmosphere here is heavy with the scent of sandalwood and centuries of royal devotion.

Then, the mood shifts from devotion to valor as we drive to Haldighati. This represents the “Sword” of Mewar. It is the narrow mountain pass where Maharana Pratap fought the massive Mughal army in 1576. The soil here is actually yellow (Haldi means Turmeric), stained, they say, by the blood of heroes. You will see the memorial of his loyal horse, Chetak, and relive the battle that defined Rajput pride.

Trip Highlights

What makes this day trip unforgettable.

  • The Real King: Have Darshan of the four-faced black marble idol of Eklingji. This is the private deity of the royal family, and the energy inside is intense.

  • 108 Temples: Walk through the complex carved from sandstone and marble. It feels like a small city of gods.

  • The Yellow Soil: Touch the earth at Haldighati Pass. It is a geological marvel that gave the battlefield its name.

  • Chetak Smarak: Pay respects at the memorial of Chetak, the horse who jumped a 25-foot ravine to save his master’s life before dying in his lap.

  • Pratap Museum: Visit the museum that brings the battle to life with models, weapons, and a light-and-sound show.

  • Rose Gardens: Drive through the fields of Chaitri Roses (famous in this region) used to make Gulkand and Rose Water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we visit Nathdwara (Shrinathji) also?

Is the museum good?

It is a private museum (Balaji Museum) which is very popular. It has animatronics (moving statues) and a short movie that kids usually enjoy.

Is there hiking?

Not really. You can walk around the Chetak Smarak gardens, but it is mostly a sightseeing tour by car.

Is the yellow soil still there?

: Yes, at the "Rakt Talai" (Blood Pond) area and the pass itself, the soil has a distinct yellow-orange hue due to iron oxide, though locals call it Haldi (Turmeric) color.

Can we buy souvenirs?

Haldighati is famous for Rose Products (Perfume, Sharbat, Gulkand) and Terracotta Art (from the nearby Molela village).

What is the best time to start?

9:00 AM to 9:30 AM is the perfect start time to reach Eklingji right when it opens fully and beat the heat at Haldighati.
