Trip Overview

Fatehpur Sikri is a frozen moment in history. In 1569, the Great Emperor Akbar—who had everything but an heir—came here barefoot to seek the blessings of the Sufi Saint Salim Chishti. The Saint prophesied a son. When the prophecy came true, Akbar built a utopia of red sandstone on this rocky ridge.

But the dream was short-lived. Just 14 years later, the city was abandoned due to a shortage of water and political unrest. Today, it stands exactly as the Mughals left it—perfectly preserved, silent, and hauntingly beautiful. On this tour, you will walk the empty corridors where Tansen once sang and where Akbar discussed the unity of all religions.

Trip Highlights

What makes this day trip unforgettable.

  • Buland Darwaza: Crane your neck to see the “Gate of Victory.” Standing 54 meters tall, it is the highest gateway in Asia, built to commemorate the conquest of Gujarat.

  • Tomb of Salim Chishti: Enter the white marble jewel in the middle of the red courtyard. It is believed that tying a red thread (Kalava) on the lattice screens here fulfills wishes, just as it did for the Emperor.

  • Panch Mahal: See the “Wind Catcher” tower—a five-story palace open on all sides, designed for the royal ladies to enjoy the cool evening breeze.

  • Diwan-i-Khas: Witness the famous central pillar where Akbar sat, symbolizing his dominance over the four corners of the world and his acceptance of all faiths.

  • Jodha Bai’s Palace: Explore the largest harem palace, blending Hindu Rajput architecture with Islamic domes.

Timeline & Itinerary

Your private chauffeur collects you in Agra. We drive west on the Jaipur highway. The bustling city fades into mustard fields. In less than an hour, you see a long ridge of red walls rising from the plains.

10:00 AM: The Shuttle Ride

Cars are not allowed near the monument to protect it from pollution. We park at the base. You hop onto the CNG Shuttle Bus. It climbs the steep hill, dropping you at the Agra Gate.

10:15 AM: The Palace Complex (Ticketed Area)

We enter the royal living quarters first.

  • The Story: Walk through the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience). Imagine the elephant fights in the courtyard.

  • The Architecture: Visit the Anup Talao (a pool where legendary musician Tansen performed). The guide explains how the palaces were cooled by water channels—a luxury that eventually ran dry.

11:30 AM: The Mosque & The Saint

We exit the palaces and walk to the massive Jama Masjid courtyard (Free Entry).

  • The Contrast: Suddenly, amidst the red stone, you see the glowing white marble tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti.

  • The Ritual: Cover your head. Enter the tomb. The atmosphere is thick with incense and silence. Tie a thread if you have a wish.

12:30 PM: The Return Drive

We take the shuttle back to the car park. We begin the drive back to Agra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we do this on the way to Jaipur?

es! This is the best way to do it. Fatehpur Sikri is exactly on the route from Agra to Jaipur. Plan: Agra -> Fatehpur Sikri -> Abhaneri Stepwell -> Jaipur.

Why was it abandoned?

The primary reason was the scarcity of water. The elaborate water systems failed to support the growing population. Also, Emperor Akbar had to move his capital to Lahore to fight wars in the northwest.

How much time is needed for walking?

Expect to walk about 2 km in total. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The red sandstone gets very hot in summer, so visit early morning or late afternoon.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Partially. The Palace complex has ramps and flat walkways. However, the Mosque area (Buland Darwaza) has very steep steps and is difficult for wheelchairs. There is a side entrance for easier access, but it is bumpy.

Is a guide necessary?

Yes. Unlike the Taj Mahal (which is visual), Fatehpur Sikri is about stories. Without a guide explaining which room was for the Hindu wife, which was for the Christian wife, and where the Emperor played "human chess," it just looks like empty red buildings.

Is it open on Fridays?

Yes, it is open every day from Sunrise to Sunset. (Unlike the Taj Mahal, which is closed on Fridays).
