Trip Overview

Swap the roar of the tiger for the song of the crane. Bharatpur, home to the Keoladeo National Park (formerly Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary), is one of the most important bird breeding grounds in the world. Unlike typical safaris in noisy jeeps, here you explore the jungle on a Cycle Rickshaw. It is a peaceful, slow-motion adventure where your rickshaw puller (often a trained naturalist) points out thousands of migratory birds, huge pythons, and spotted deer. Whether you are an avid birder carrying a telephoto lens or a family looking for a quiet nature walk, Bharatpur offers a connection with nature that is rare to find. We also visit the invincible Lohagarh Fort, known as the “Iron Fort” of India.

Trip Highlights

What makes this day trip unforgettable.

  • The Rickshaw Safari: Experience the jungle in the most eco-friendly way—on a Cycle Rickshaw. It is silent, relaxing, and allows you to get incredibly close to the birds.

  • World Heritage Site: Visit Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that hosts over 370 species of birds.

  • Migratory Guests: In winter, witness thousands of birds flying in from Siberia, Central Asia, and China.

  • The Iron Fort: Explore Lohagarh Fort, the only fort in India that the British army failed to capture despite multiple attacks.

  • Wildlife Variety: Apart from birds, spot Blue Bulls (Nilgai), Sambar Deer, Wild Boars, and huge Rock Pythons basking in the sun.

Timeline & Itinerary

08:00 AM: The Morning Drive

Your private chauffeur arrives at your hotel in Jaipur. We head east on the Agra Highway (NH-21). The road is smooth and scenic, passing through the sandstone quarries of Bansi Paharpur. Sit back and watch the landscape change from rocky hills to the lush plains of Braj.

11:30 AM: Arrival at the Sanctuary

We arrive at the gates of Keoladeo National Park. Here, you meet your unique guide—your Rickshaw Puller. These locals know the park like the back of their hand. Hop onto the comfortable seat and enter the green tunnel of trees.

12:00 PM: The Birding Safari

As you glide silently through the wetlands, the silence is broken only by the cacophony of nesting Painted Storks and cormorants. Your rickshaw puller will stop at the best spots. Look through your binoculars to spot the rare Siberian Crane (if lucky), Kingfishers, and Eagles. It is a photographer’s dream.

02:30 PM: Lunch Break

After the safari, we exit the park and stop for a relaxed lunch at a nearby resort. Enjoy fresh North Indian cuisine in a garden setting (Direct Payment).

03:30 PM: The Iron Fort (Lohagarh)

A short drive takes us to the heart of Bharatpur city to see Lohagarh Fort. Unlike the decorative palaces of Jaipur, this mud-walled fort was built for war. Visit the museum inside to see weapons and artifacts from the Jat rulers who defied the British Empire.

05:00 PM: The Return Drive

As the sun begins to dip, we start the drive back to Jaipur. The return journey is a perfect time to review your photos or take a nap.

08:30 PM: Doorstep Drop-off

We arrive back in the Pink City. We drop you right at your hotel doorstep, ending a day of nature and history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we take our car inside the park?

No. To minimize pollution and noise, private vehicles are parked at the gate. You must use the approved Cycle Rickshaws, Bicycles, or Electric Vans provided by the park.

Can we visit Deeg Palace?

Yes! Deeg Palace (famous for its water fountains) is 35 km from Bharatpur. We can include it if you skip Lohagarh Fort or start very early (7:00 AM).

How much walking is involved?

Very little if you hire a rickshaw. The rickshaw takes you through the main paths, and you only need to step off if you want to take photos or look closer.

Is the Rickshaw Puller a guide?

Most rickshaw pullers in Bharatpur have been doing this for decades. They carry binoculars and bird books and are excellent at spotting birds. However, for a deep scientific tour, you can hire a separate Naturalist Guide.

Is it worth visiting in summer?

In summer (April-June), the migratory birds leave, and the water levels drop. However, you can still see resident birds (Peacocks, Owls, Eagles) and animals like Jackals and Deer.

Can we combine this with Agra/Taj Mahal?

Yes. Bharatpur is just 1 hour from Agra. Many travelers do Jaipur -> Bharatpur -> Fatehpur Sikri -> Agra as a transfer tour.
