Pokhran is famous for two very different reasons. For the world, it is the place where India conducted its Nuclear Tests (1974 and 1998), changing the course of history. For the locals, it is the home of Balagarh (Pokhran Fort), a stunning 14th-century fortress built of red sandstone that stands out against the yellow desert like a ruby.
On this tour, you drive east from the Golden City. The landscape changes from yellow dunes to red rocky terrain. You will explore the fort which is still owned by the royal family, see the beautiful blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture, and witness the unique geometric pottery that this region is famous for. 10:00 AM: The Highway Drive
Your private chauffeur collects you in Jaisalmer. We drive east on NH-11. This is the main road connecting Jaisalmer to Jodhpur. The drive is smooth and fast.
12:00 PM: The Red Fortress
We reach Pokhran Fort.
The Entry: Pass through the massive spiked gates. The red stone walls are imposing.
The Museum: Walk through the Hawa Mahal and Mangal Niwas. The museum collection is personal and well-preserved. You can see the heavy swords used by the Rathore warriors.
The View: Climb to the ramparts. Look out over the town. This is the view the kings had while watching for enemy armies.

We drive to the nearby potters’ area.
The Craft: Watch the artisans mold the red clay. Pokhran pottery is distinct—it is sturdy and painted with sharp geometric lines. It makes for a great, cheap souvenir.

We begin the journey back to Jaisalmer. The afternoon sun makes the desert look golden again.
