Trip Circuit
Jaisalmer -> Amar Sagar (7 km) -> Kuldhara (18 km) -> Jaisalmer.
Drive Time
Approx. 30 Minutes to reach Kuldhara.
Road Condition

Total Trip Duration
4 – 5 Hours (Half Day Heritage & Mystery Trip).
Trip Overview
This tour is a study in silence, but of two very different kinds. First, you visit Amar Sagar, a serene oasis where the silence is spiritual. It is the oldest water tank in the area, guarded by a Jain temple so intricately carved that the yellow sandstone looks like gold filigree.
Then, you drive deeper into the desert to Kuldhara. Here, the silence is heavy. This wealthy village of Paliwal Brahmins was abandoned overnight in 1825 to protect a girl’s honor from a tyrant minister. No one saw them leave. No one knows where they went. They left behind a curse that no one could ever settle here again. Today, you walk through the roofless homes, feeling the eyes of the past watching you.
Trip Highlights
What makes this day trip unforgettable.
✅ The Haunted Village: Walk the empty streets of Kuldhara. See the “Headman’s House” (Mukhiya ki Haveli), which is surprisingly intact, offering a glimpse into how they lived before the exodus.
✅ Amar Sagar Jain Temple: Marvel at the Adishwar Nath Temple. The craftsmanship rivals the famous Dilwara temples, with ceilings and pillars carved with unparalleled precision.
✅ The Stepwells: Both sites feature ancient stepwells. The one at Kuldhara is eerie and dry; the one at Amar Sagar is a geometric masterpiece often filled with water.
✅ The Lake Pavilion: Sit in the stone pavilions (Chattris) of Amar Sagar. With the water on one side and the temple on the other, it is the most peaceful spot in Jaisalmer.
✅ The Sunset Verdict: (Optional) If you time it right, watching the sun go down over the ruins of Kuldhara adds a spooky, golden glow to the ghost town.
Timeline & Itinerary
02:00 PM: The Short Drive
Your private chauffeur collects you in Jaisalmer. We drive west towards the Sam road. The city noise fades quickly.
02:30 PM: The Lakeside Jewel (Amar Sagar)
We reach Amar Sagar.
The Temple: Remove your shoes. Enter the temple dedicated to Lord Parshvanath. Look closely at the walls—the stone is carved into delicate flowers and vines.
The Tank: Walk down the steps to the water’s edge. The reflection of the pavilions in the water is picture-perfect. It feels like a royal garden frozen in time.
03:45 PM: Into the Mystery (Kuldhara)
We drive 20 minutes further into the scrubland. You see a gate that says “Kuldhara.”
The Entry: You drive through the arched gateway. Suddenly, you see hundreds of crumbling walls.
The Exploration: Walk the dusty lanes. Peek inside the roofless houses. You can see the niches for lamps and the ovens where they cooked their last meal.
The Legend: Your guide tells the story of Salim Singh, the cruel Prime Minister whose lust destroyed this town. Stand in the center of the village and try to listen—locals say you can hear the footsteps of the villagers leaving.
05:30 PM: The Golden Hour
The sun begins to dip. The shadows in the ruins get longer. The “haunted” vibe sets in. It is time to leave before the gates close.

07:00 PM: Doorstep Drop-off

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kuldhara really haunted?
The Paranormal Society of Delhi has recorded "unexplained activities" here. Locals refuse to stay at night. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the atmosphere is definitely eerie and heavy.
Is there food available?
There are a few small tea stalls and a cafe ("Dreamtime") near the Kuldhara parking lot, but nothing inside the ruins. Amar Sagar has very limited facilities. Eat a heavy lunch before you leave.
Is it safe for kids?
Yes. It is a historical site. Just tell them the "Curse" story after the trip if they get scared easily!
Can we enter the houses?
Yes. Most houses are just ruins with no roofs, so you can walk right in. A few houses (like the Chief's house) have been restored to show what they looked like in the 19th century.
Can we do this on the way to Sam Sand Dunes?
Yes! This is the smartest plan. Itinerary: Jaisalmer -> Amar Sagar -> Kuldhara -> Sam Sand Dunes (Camel Ride/Dinner) -> Jaisalmer. This saves you a separate trip.
What is the "Cactus Park"?
Near Kuldhara, the government has developed a small cactus garden. It is a quick 10-minute stop if you are interested in desert botany.
