Trip Overview
This is not a regular sightseeing tour; it is a pilgrimage of patriotism. You leave the Golden City and drive west until the road ends and Pakistan begins. The landscape here is stark, beautiful, and silent—except for the wind.
Your first stop is Tanot Mata, a temple that defied the laws of physics during the 1965 war when 3,000 enemy bombs fell around it but not a single one exploded. From faith, you move to firepower at Longewala. This is the exact battlefield where, on that legendary night in 1971, Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri and 120 Indian soldiers held off a massive Pakistani tank assault. Walking amidst the captured enemy tanks rusting in the sand is a surreal experience.
Trip Highlights
What makes this day trip unforgettable.
✅ The Unexploded Bombs: See the actual Pakistani shells from the 1965 war displayed inside the Tanot temple museum. They stand as proof of the “Miracle of Tanot.”
✅ Longewala War Memorial: Stand in the trenches where the movie Border was based. Touch the captured Pakistani T-59 tanks and Sherman tanks that are stuck in the sand forever.
✅ The Hunter Aircraft: See the Indian Air Force “Hunter” jet displayed at the site, the same type that destroyed the enemy tank columns at dawn.
✅ The Border Drive: Drive on one of the best roads in India. The “Bharatmala” network offers endless horizons of sand dunes with almost zero traffic.
✅ Bawliyan Check Post: (Optional) Visit the border pillar where you can see the fence separating India and Pakistan.
Timeline & Itinerary
10:00 AM: The Frontier Drive
Your private chauffeur collects you in Jaisalmer. We drive towards Ramgarh.
The Landscape: As we pass the TV Tower, civilization fades. The dunes get bigger. You will see herds of wild camels and possibly the Great Indian Bustard (if very lucky). The road is a black ribbon on gold sand.
12:30 PM: The Miracle Temple (Tanot)
We reach Tanot Mata. It is managed by the BSF (Border Security Force).
The Legend: Enter the temple. It is small and quiet. The BSF jawans perform the Aarti here.
The Evidence: Visit the museum room. See the bombs. It sends a shiver down your spine to think that metal rained from the sky here, and faith shielded the soldiers.
01:30 PM: The Battle Run
We drive 40 minutes west to Longewala. This road runs parallel to the border.
The Tank Graveyard: As you approach, you see them. Massive tanks sitting in the desert. They aren’t models; they are the actual war trophies.
The Bunker: Walk into the concrete bunkers. Read the names of the martyrs. Watch the short documentary shown by the Army in the AV room. It brings the battle to life.
03:00 PM: Soldier’s Lunch
We eat at the BSF Canteen or a small local cafe near the memorial. The food is simple (Maggi, Parathas, Tea), but eating it where heroes fought makes it special. (Lunch is Direct Payment).
04:00 PM: The Return Loop
We take the Ramgarh bypass back to Jaisalmer.
The Sunset: If we time it right, we stop at a random dune near Ramgarh. No tourists, no camels—just you and the setting sun in the absolute silence of the Thar.
06:30 PM: Doorstep Drop-off
We drop you back at your hotel in Jaisalmer.
Is This Trip Perfect For You?
✅ Patriots: Every Indian grows up hearing about the Battle of Longewala. Seeing it is emotional.
✅ Road Trippers: The driving experience on these empty, smooth desert roads is hypnotic.
✅ Photographers: The contrast of the green army tanks against the yellow sand is visually striking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we go to the Zero Line (Fence)?
Not on this tour. Going to the actual Zero Line (BP 609) requires special written permission from the BSF Commandant Office in Jaisalmer, which takes 1-2 days to process. This tour goes up to the Longewala Memorial (approx 15 km from the fence), which is open to all civilians.
Is it safe?
Yes, 100%. It is a high-security zone managed by the Indian Army and BSF. The roads are excellent and safe for tourists.
Is food available?
Only basic snacks (Chips, Biscuits, Maggi, Tea) are available at the temple and memorial canteens. It is highly recommended to pack a lunch or heavy snacks from Jaisalmer.
Can we see Pakistan?
From Longewala, you can see the watchtowers in the distance with binoculars, but you cannot see "Pakistan" clearly with the naked eye.
Is the road sandy?
No, the road is paved and excellent. However, sand often drifts onto the road (like snow). Your driver knows how to navigate these "sand drifts."
Can we do this in the evening?
We recommend starting by 11:00 AM at the latest. Driving on border roads after dark is restricted and not recommended for civilians. You should aim to be back in Ramgarh by sunset.
