Trip Overview
This is a journey between two rival kingdoms. You start in Jodhpur (Marwar), the land of sand and flat plains. You end in Kumbhalgarh (Mewar), the land of mountains and forests. To get there, you must cross the legendary Desuri Ki Naal—a rugged mountain pass that historically separated these two powers.
Your destination is Kumbhalgarh, home to the second-longest wall in the world (36 km), second only to China. Built by the genius King Rana Kumbha in the 15th century, this fort protected the Mewar kings whenever Udaipur was in danger. It is massive, remote, and incredibly atmospheric. Standing on its ramparts, looking down at the wild sanctuary, you feel the sheer isolation that made this place invincible.
Trip Highlights
What makes this day trip unforgettable.
✅ The Great Wall: Walk on the massive perimeter walls. They snake through 13 mountain peaks and are wide enough for eight horses to run abreast.
✅ Desuri Ki Naal: Experience the thrill of driving through this ancient mountain pass. The road cuts through the Aravalli range, offering spectacular views of the cliffs and forests.
✅ Badal Mahal: Climb to the Palace of Clouds at the very top. From here, on a clear day, you can actually see the sand dunes of the Thar Desert where you started your journey!
✅ Birthplace of a Hero: See the room where Maharana Pratap, the greatest warrior of Rajasthan, was born.
✅ The Sanctuary Drive: The last leg of the drive goes through the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary. Keep your eyes open for wild boars, peacocks, and langurs.
Timeline & Itinerary
08:00 AM: The Highway Run
Your private chauffeur collects you in Jodhpur. We head south on NH-62 towards Pali. The morning light hits the flat, arid plains. It’s a fast, straight drive past sleepy villages and camel carts.
10:30 AM: The Mountain Pass
The landscape changes abruptly. We enter Desuri Ki Naal. The road narrows and starts to climb. You are leaving the desert behind and entering the forest. The air gets cooler. Monkeys watch from the roadside. This is the gateway to Mewar.
12:00 PM: Arrival at the Fortress
We reach the massive Ram Pol (Main Gate). The walls loom over you, stretching as far as the eye can see.
The First Look: It doesn’t look like a building; it looks like a part of the mountain itself.
12:30 PM: The Climb to the Top
We begin the hike up to the main palace. It is a steep walk (approx 1 km).
The Temples: Pass by the Vedi Temple (Sacrificial Altar) and Neelkanth Mahadev.
The Palace: Reach Badal Mahal. Enter the airy rooms painted in pastel colors. The wind howls through the windows. Look north—that hazy horizon is Jodhpur.
02:00 PM: Lunch with a View
We descend and exit the fort for lunch. Resorts like The Aodhi or Kumbhalgarh Forest Retreat offer excellent Rajasthani meals on open terraces overlooking the hills. (Lunch is Direct Payment).
03:00 PM: The Wall Walk
Post-lunch, take a walk along the ramparts of the Great Wall. This is the best spot for wide-angle photography. The curve of the wall against the rugged valley is dramatic.
04:30 PM: The Return Journey
We begin the drive back. We descend through the pass again. The transition from the green hills back to the dry plains at sunset is beautiful.
08:30 PM: Doorstep Drop-off
We drop you back at your hotel in Jodhpur, tired but triumphant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we drop in Udaipur instead of returning to Jodhpur?
Yes! This is the smartest way to travel. We pick you up in Jodhpur, visit Kumbhalgarh on the way, and drop you in Udaipur. It saves you a full day of travel and money.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Partially. You can see the wall and lower temples from the entrance. However, the main palace (Badal Mahal) is not accessible by wheelchair as there are steep slopes and steps.
Is it safe for solo travelers?
Yes, completely safe. The fort is a major tourist destination with security guards.
Is the Light & Sound show possible?
No. The show starts at 6:45 PM. If you stay for it, you will have to drive back through the mountain pass at night and won't reach Jodhpur until midnight. It is not recommended for a day trip.
Are there tigers here?
No. The sanctuary has Leopards, Wolves, and Bears, but they are rarely seen during the day on the main road. You will mostly see monkeys.
Can we visit Ranakpur also?
Yes, Ranakpur is on the way (sort of). A combined trip (Jodhpur -> Ranakpur -> Kumbhalgarh -> Jodhpur) is possible but requires starting at 7:00 AM sharp.
