Trip Overview

Ghanerao is a secret kept by the Aravallis. Located on the border of Mewar (Udaipur) and Marwar (Jodhpur), this village was once a premier noble estate (Thikana). Unlike the museum-like forts of big cities, Ghanerao is alive.

On this tour, you will step into “Raw Rajasthan.” You will visit the Royal Castle Ghanerao, still inhabited by the noble family, with its fading frescoes and marble pavilions. You will hunt for ancient Baoris (Stepwells) hidden in the scrublands and visit the curious Mucchal Mahavir Temple, where the Lord wears a moustache! It is a day of red turbans, crumbling history, and absolute silence.

Trip Highlights

What makes this day trip unforgettable.

  • Royal Castle Ghanerao: Explore the 1606 AD castle. See the “Marble Baradari” and the private museum collection. It has a hauntingly beautiful, rustic charm.

  • Mucchal Mahavir: Visit the legendary Jain temple situated in the Kumbhalgarh sanctuary. It is the only place where Lord Mahavir is worshipped with a moustache.

  • Stepwell Hunt: Ghanerao is famous for having over 30 ancient stepwells. We will visit the most photogenic ones, often used by village women to fetch water.

  • Garasia Tribe: Witness the life of the local Garasia tribals. Their colorful clothes and heavy silver jewelry are distinct from the rest of Rajasthan.

  • Jungle Drive: The route passes through the core of the Ranakpur forest. You might spot Langurs, Peacocks, and Blue Bulls on the roadside.

11:30 AM: Arrival & The Moustache Temple

We arrive at the outskirts of Ghanerao to visit Mucchal Mahavir Temple.

  • The Legend: Hear the story of the Rana of Mewar who jokingly asked a priest if the idol had a moustache, and how the Lord miraculously grew one to save the priest’s honor.

  • The Nature: The temple is surrounded by wild monkeys and forest trees.

  • The People: Meet the local potters or opium vendors (traditional culture) in the market.

03:30 PM: Ranakpur Stop (Optional)

Since Ranakpur Jain Temple is on the way back (just 15 km away), we can make a quick stop to see the famous marble pillars if you haven’t seen them yet.

04:30 PM: The Return Journey

We begin the journey back. The drive through the ghats at golden hour is magical.

07:00 PM: Doorstep Drop-off

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we combine this with Kumbhalgarh?

Yes. Kumbhalgarh is about 1 hour from Ghanerao. We can do Udaipur -> Kumbhalgarh (Fort) -> Ghanerao (Lunch/Village) -> Udaipur. It will be a long day (11-12 hours).

Can we buy local crafts?

Yes, the village has potters and some textile shops. It is not a big market like Udaipur, but you can find authentic clay items.

Is there trekking?

Yes, Ghanerao is a base for trekking to Kumbhalgarh (through the forest). However, that is a full-day activity (4-5 hours hike) and cannot be done on a sightseeing car trip.

Is the castle open to the public?

Yes, a part of the castle is a heritage hotel and museum open to visitors. The private residence of the royal family is separate.

What is special about the stepwells?

Unlike the famous Chand Baori (Abhaneri), the stepwells here are small, numerous, and un-restored. They look wild and ancient, overgrown with vines, which makes for very atmospheric photos.

Is it safe?

Yes, very safe. The villagers are friendly and used to tourists.
