Trip Overview

Bharatpur (Keoladeo National Park) is one of the world’s most important bird breeding and feeding grounds. Once the royal duck-hunting reserve of the Maharajas, today it is a protected sanctuary for over 370 species of birds.

The magic of Bharatpur lies in its silence. Unlike other national parks where you are stuck in a noisy jeep, here you explore on a Cycle Rickshaw. Your rickshaw puller is not just a driver; he is a trained naturalist who knows exactly where the owls are hiding and where the pythons are sleeping. From the majestic Painted Storks nesting on trees to the rare migratory ducks from Siberia and China, this tour is a visual treat for photographers and families alike.

Trip Highlights

What makes this day trip unforgettable.

  • The Rickshaw Safari: Experience the unique joy of gliding through the forest on a cycle rickshaw. It is eco-friendly, quiet, and allows you to get very close to the birds.

  • Migratory Birds: (Winter Special) Witness thousands of birds that fly from Central Asia to winter here. The sight of the wetlands painted pink and white by storks and cranes is unforgettable.

  • The Python Point: Walk near the Python Point to spot massive Indian Rock Pythons basking in the sun near their burrows.

  • Lohagarh Fort: (Optional) Visit the “Iron Fort” of Bharatpur, famous for remaining unconquered despite multiple British attacks.

  • Yamuna Expressway: Enjoy a smooth, traffic-free drive from Delhi, making the long distance feel short.

Timeline & Itinerary

06:00 AM: The Expressway Start

Your private chauffeur arrives at your hotel in Delhi/NCR. We hit the Yamuna Expressway. The drive is foggy and beautiful in winter. Watch the sun rise over the mustard fields as we cruise at 100 km/h towards Agra, turning off for Bharatpur.

10:00 AM: Arrival at Keoladeo

We arrive at the sanctuary gate. The noise of the highway disappears. We purchase tickets and hire a Govt. Approved Cycle Rickshaw. Meet your Rickshaw-Wala guide—he likely knows more about birds than most textbooks.

10:30 AM: Into the Wetlands

The safari begins. We ride down the main paved path.

  • Stop 1: The nursery. See trees heavy with hundreds of Painted Storks feeding their young. The sound of their clattering beaks is loud and rhythmic.

  • Stop 2: The wetlands. Use your binoculars to spot Ducks, Geese, Pelicans, and Eagles hunting in the water.

  • Stop 3: The inner track. We get off the rickshaw and walk on the mud paths to spot Kingfishers and Owlets.

01:30 PM: Heritage Lunch

We exit the park and head to a heritage hotel like Laxmi Vilas Palace or The Bagh. Enjoy a relaxed lunch in a garden setting, discussing the species you just spotted. (Lunch is Direct Payment).

02:30 PM: Lohagarh Fort (Optional)

If you are not too tired, we visit the massive Lohagarh Fort and the government museum inside. It is a fortress of mud and stone that defied the British empire.

04:00 PM: The Return Drive

We begin the journey back. The drive on the expressway is smooth. You can scroll through your amazing photos or take a nap.

08:00 PM: Doorstep Drop-off

We arrive back in Delhi. We drop you right at your hotel, ending a day of fresh air and feathers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we combine this with Agra/Taj Mahal?

Yes. Agra is just 1 hour from Bharatpur. We can do Delhi -> Taj Mahal -> Bharatpur -> Delhi. However, this will be a very long day, and you will get less time inside the bird sanctuary.

Is food available inside the park?

There is a canteen at the second checkpoint (Keoladeo Temple) inside the park serving snacks and tea. However, for a proper meal, you must exit the park.

Are there tigers here?

No. This is a bird sanctuary. You will see birds, deer, nilgai (antelope), jackals, wild boars, and pythons, but no tigers or leopards.

Can we walk inside the park?

Yes. The main path is about 11 km long. Most tourists take a rickshaw for the first 3-4 km (the main wetland area) and then walk on the inner trails.

Do we need a separate guide?

Generally, No. The Rickshaw Pullers in Bharatpur are trained by the forest department. They carry binoculars and bird books and know the birds' names in English.

Is it wheelchair friendly?

Yes, the main paved road is accessible by wheelchair, and the rickshaw pullers are very helpful in assisting elderly guests.
