Desert Heritage, Havelis & Unique Rituals

Why We Curated This Specific Route

Bikaner is often skipped by tourists rushing to Jaisalmer, but it offers a more authentic, less crowded desert experience. We designed this 3-day road trip from Jaipur to uncover its hidden gems.

  • The “Real” Havelis: While Jaisalmer has yellow stone havelis, Bikaner has the stunning Rampuria Havelis made of Dulmera red sandstone. Walking these streets feels like stepping into a Victorian-era painting.

  • The Unconquered Fort: We take you to Junagarh Fort, one of the few forts in Rajasthan that was never captured. Unlike others built on hills, this one sits on the plains, offering a unique architectural perspective.

  • The Curious Temple: No trip to Bikaner is complete without the Karni Mata Temple (Deshnok). We include this on the return leg—it is the only place in the world where 25,000 rats are worshipped as ancestors.

The Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Jaipur to Bikaner | The Red City Awaits

Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel or airport in Jaipur. We hit the highway towards the desert city of Bikaner (approx. 5-6 hours drive). Watch the landscape change from the Aravalli hills to the scrub desert.

Upon arrival and check-in, we waste no time. In the late afternoon, we take a Heritage Walk through the old city to see the famous Rampuria Havelis. These red sandstone mansions belonged to wealthy merchants and boast intricate carvings that rival any palace. We also visit the Bhandasar Jain Temple, famous not just for its mirror work but for the legend that 40,000 kg of ghee (clarified butter) was used in its foundation instead of water.

Day Highlights:

  • Scenic road trip from Jaipur to Bikaner.

  • Heritage Walk in the Old City lanes.

  • Photography at the stunning Rampuria Havelis.

  • Visit the ghee-foundation Bhandasar Jain Temple.

  • Overnight stay in Bikaner.

Day 02: Forts, Palaces & The Ship of the Desert

After breakfast, we visit Junagarh Fort. Built in the 16th century, this fort is a maze of palaces, courtyards, and pavilions. The gold-leaf work in the Anup Mahal is breathtaking. Next, we visit the Lalgarh Palace Museum, a grand structure that blends Rajput, Mughal, and European styles.

In the afternoon, we head to the National Research Centre on Camel (Camel Breeding Farm). It is the only one of its kind in Asia. You can see hundreds of camels, watch the baby calves, and even taste unique camel milk ice cream!

Day Highlights:

  • Explore the invincible Junagarh Fort.

  • Admire the artifacts at Lalgarh Palace Museum.

  • Unique Experience: Visit the Camel Breeding Farm.

  • Taste Camel Milk Tea or Ice Cream (Optional).

  • Relaxed evening at the hotel.

Day 03: The Rat Temple & Return to Jaipur

We start Day 3 with a visit to one of India’s most fascinating sites: the Karni Mata Temple at Deshnok (30km from Bikaner). Here, thousands of rats (kabas) roam freely and are fed by devotees. Spotting a white rat is considered extremely lucky!

After this unique spiritual experience, we begin our return drive to Jaipur. We drop you at your hotel, airport, or railway station in Jaipur by evening, completing a loop of culture, curiosity, and desert life.

Day Highlights:

  • Visit the famous Karni Mata (Rat) Temple.

  • Observe the unique rituals and beliefs.

  • Drive back to Jaipur.

  • Assisted drop-off at Airport/Station.

  • End of services with happy memories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Rat Temple scary/dirty?

Surprisingly, no. The temple is kept very clean, and the rats are generally harmless and busy eating sweets. It is a place of deep faith. However, it is definitely a unique sight that might not be for everyone.

Can we start this tour from Delhi?

Yes, but Bikaner is closer to Jaipur. If starting from Delhi, we recommend taking a train to Bikaner (overnight) or driving (7-8 hours). We can arrange a pickup directly from Bikaner station.

Is Bikaner hotter than Jaipur?

Yes, Bikaner is deeper in the Thar Desert. Summers (April-June) are scorching. The best time to visit is October to March. January brings the famous Camel Festival.

What is special about the Camel Farm?

It is Asia's largest camel breeding center. You can see different breeds of camels, learn about their behavior, and even go for a short camel ride. The on-site parlor sells camel milk coffee and kulfi (ice cream).

What should I buy in Bikaner?

Bikaner is famous for three things: Bhujia (spicy snacks), Rasgullas (sweets), and Leather items (Mojaris/Bags) made from camel leather. The Kote Gate market is the best place to shop.

Why is Junagarh Fort different?

Most forts in Rajasthan (like Amber or Mehrangarh) are on hilltops for defense. Junagarh was built on the plains, relying on its massive walls and moat for protection. This makes it easier to explore as there is less climbing involved.
